Clarence Jones Lifetime Employee & Friend
Clarence was born in 1908 and lived on or near Orton and worked at Orton his whole life. He grew rice at Orton until the last commercial crop in the early 1930’s. He helped install the original plantings in the gardens from the 1920’s to the 1970’s. We celebrated his 100th birthday in August of 2008 with a family reunion and celebration at Orton. He continued to offer routine planting and landscaping advice up until his death in November of 2008. Clarence's presence at Orton has been greatly missed, but his positive attitude, relentless humor and zest for life will always be remembered. Orton has declared August to be "Clarence Jones Appreciation Month."
Laurence Sprunt Owner
Laurence grew up with his family at Orton at the end of the commercial rice production and during the design and installation of the gardens. His primary focus has always been Forest Management on the land surrounding the gardens. Since the 1980’s he has been converting the loblolly and slash pine tree stands to native longleaf pine tree stands. He also started the thriving pine straw business in the 1980’s.
